Lego Club Robotic Teams from Weare Middle School

Uncategorized | Monday November 23 2009 6:02 pm | Comments (0)

Cosmic Creators, one of the Weare Middle School FLL Robotics teams, won the Concord Regional Tournament on Saturday, November 21st at Bishop Brady High School. A total of 22 teams were in attendance. The Cosmic Creators won two first-place trophies: first place in robotics and also first place Championship Award.

The robotics part of the competition is the most well known part of the competition. The teams compete by programming robots to accomplish specific missions on 4’ by 8’ tables in the gymnasium. The event is exciting and intense as there are hundreds of people cheering on their teams. After several hours of competition, the top 8 teams are placed into a quarter-final round. Then the top 4 teams go onto the semi-finals and then the top two teams compete in one final round. The Cosmic Creators advanced all the way through the tournament to the final round where they won the first place robotics award.

The Championship Award is an all-around award based on all four parts of the activity: robotics, a presentation about a project that each team creates, a teamwork exercise, and a technical presentation about robot design and programming.

The Cosmic Creators project was to tackle one of the major problems in Weare – a lack of communication about town events. So, the team has started a website devoted to Weare news. The site is www.wearenhnews.com.

The members of the team are all 5th and 6th graders at Weare Middle School. They are Lucas Anderson, Ben Flanders, Noah Payeur, Caleb Reed and Ben Trumble. The four coaches are three parents, Pam and Jeff Anderson and David Trumble, and also the technology education teacher at the Middle School, Mr. Zack Fowler.

The Weare Middle School has two robotics teams. The other team is called the Techno Titans, and is coached by Tina Connor and Carol Zintel. Techno Titans members are: Trevor Brown, Edward Carr, Allison Grenier, Caleb Morrison, Shannon Soucy, and Katie Zintel. They competed at a tournament at Merrimack High School and came in seventh.

The Cosmic Creators will be going on to the FLL State Championships at Bedford High School on December 6th.

Another team from Weare, the We Are Geeks, a home school team, also qualified for the State tournament by winning the presentation category of the tournament at the Bishop Brady tournament. Another Weare home school team, We Are Bots, qualified at a tournament at Merrimack High School the previous weekend. This will make three teams from the town of Weare at the State Tournament.

Great Job to both teams!

Believe it or not, it is time to discuss Shop for the Holidays!

Uncategorized | Monday November 23 2009 5:12 pm | Comments (0)

For those of you that are new to Center Woods, this event is sponsored by

Weare Friends PTO and it is an event that is truly enjoyed by students and the entire staff each year!

From Monday, December 7th through Friday, December 11th there will be a

“holiday store” set up in the library. Your child will have the opportunity to purchase gifts during his/her scheduled library block.

There is a large variety of low cost gifts to chose from. Students can shop for Mom and Dad, Grandma or Grandpa, Aunts and Uncles, brothers or sisters, special friends and more! The gifts range from $2 to $6, however the average gift is approximately $4.

Shop for the Holidays allows students the chance to be independent when selecting gifts for their loved ones.

This year we have made arrangements for the students to wrap gifts that have been purchased for parents. In years past, students have expressed that it is difficult to keep the gifts they have purchased for Mom and/or Dad a secret. We are hoping by wrapping the gifts at school it can truly be a surprise when the gifts are opened.

In order for this event to be successful, we need YOUR help! We need 5 volunteers to work 2 different shifts. The morning shift is 8:45-12:15 and then another 5 volunteers to work the afternoon shift from 12:15-3:00pm. Please see the attached schedule and consider helping with a block or two. If everyone worked 1 block, that’s all it would take! Shop for the Holidays is an event set up for ALL our children to enjoyed and any and all help is greatly appreciated. If you can volunteer please contact Marybeth Pike at one of the following: marybethpike@wearefriendspto.com or by calling 529.8513. Weare Friends PTO is also on Facebook. Search Weare-Friends Pto and we’ll accept you as a friend. This is another great tool we use to inform parents of upcoming events, check it out!

There will be more information coming on the event.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Weare Friends PTO
